NauticEd's learning model combines online theory + self-paced learning
with practical on-the-water training and assessments.
NauticEd is internationally recognized by Sail and Power boat charter companies for chartering boats in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.
NauticEd builds a live sailing resume showing:
Underway sailing operates out of Vancouver and Ladysmith.
We provide all necessary equipment for sailing lessons, including the sailboat, life jacket, and any other safety equipment.
We ask students to wear comfortable and weather appropriate clothes and shoes that can get wet. We also recommend they bring sun and wind protection.
Most of our courses are for beginners. Introduction to Sailing and Skipper Large Keelboat are designed for complete beginners.
The Bareboat Charter Master requires experience and sea time (number of days on the water).
Students should be between the ages of 16 and 80.
It is recommended for any activity on the water, but it is not a requirement. The boats we train on are keel boats, so they don’t capsize.
Everyone on the boat is required to wear a personal floatation device (PFD or life jacket) at all times.
Sailboat cruising requires mobility and balance to move around the boat while underway in various sea states. It is advised to take this into consideration before signing up for a course.
Try a day charter to determine if sailing suits your level of mobility.
Anyone can take lessons on boats. We don’t recommend taking a sailing course if being on boats is something that makes a person uncomfortable or seasick.
Try a day charter to assess your level of comfort on a sailboat.
Sailing is generally safe. There is always some risk with any activity on the water. Safety is a large part of our training and we follow the rules set out by Transport Canada and international regulations to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
We provide: Life jackets and all federally regulated safety equipment.
Students bring: Sun protection, wind protection, and wet weather gear.
Sailboat training courses are taught in rain or shine. Course cancellation typically happens if the wind conditions are too strong or too light. Make up days are then provided. This is a rare occurrence however.
Lessons run in wind conditions which are safe for the level of the course being taught. For beginner friendly courses, we teach in light to moderate winds.
The Bareboat Charter Master and SLC may require demonstration of operating the boat in moderate to strong wind conditions.
All courses take place rain or shine.
Our instructors are trained to handle emergencies on board.
Transport Canada has very strict safety regulations for all teaching vessels. The first part of any lesson or charter is to review the safety requirements for our vessel, the location of each item and its functionality. This includes: Fire extinguishers, Flares, Sound Signaling, Lifejackets, First Aid and Anchors.
Our boats are equipped with VHF radios for quick and easy contact with emergency federal agencies: the Canadian Coast Guard, Search and Rescue, and Commercial Traffic.
Students are introduced to the boat they will be training on, are familiarized with all safety features, depart the dock and begin training under power and sail.
Students learn about the main propulsion systems of the vessel: the sails and the engine.
They learn how to safely operate the boat in different scenarios:
At the end each day, the vessel returns to the dock and students learn secure the boat to the dock, coil the lines and cover the sails for the boat to be left unattended.
Courses range from 2 to 5 days, and the days are from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Visit our courses page for the length of each course.
Classes are a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5. This ensures that everyone gets time to learn about all the jobs aboard as skipper and as crew.
Absolutely! Steering is one of the most focused and most fun parts of sailing.
The majority of time is spent on the water, practicing the skills needed to pass the course. The course days are between 8 and 9 hours on the water. There is time to crew, time to steer, time to relax at anchor and time to be the skipper.
Each course requires completion of an online component through Nauticed's self-paced e-learning modules.
