Good skippers are knowledgeable, responsible, and effective communicators

Who should take this course

This mulit-day, hands on training is for those who want to improve their on-the-water sailing, communication, navigation and leadership skills toward purchasing a vessel or bareboat chartering. Accumulated sea time, cruising grounds, weather conditions and responsibilities will be added to your log book and sailing resumé.

Course Objective

In this course, students will embody the role of the skipper and take leadership on the following:


Leadership skills

  • Anticipate challenging situations and develop a proactive communication style
    instead of a reactive one
  • Develop self-management to ensure that your crew request is commensurate
    with the task at hand
  • Effectively delegate tasks and assignments and reduce ambiguity 
  • Learn how to constructively receive feedback


Sailing skills

  • Passage planning
  • Weather patterns, prevailing wind direction and strengths
  • Local tides and currents
  • Keep a log book
  • Practice emergency procedures
  • Chart plotting

Requirements

Students taking this course are required to have obtained:

  • NauticEd Skipper Large Keelboat rank, Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard, ASA 103, or international equivalent (logged sailing and sea time also accepted)
  • Pleasure Craft Operator's Card (PCOC)
  • Radio Operator Certificate (Maritime)
